Although last summer brought new life to much of New Zealand’s national parks, there are still a few residents of Mount Aspiring national Park who aren’t doing so well. The Kiwi population within the park still isn’t as high as park rangers would like it to be. Thousands of tourists come to the park while on New Zealand adventure tours to try and spot the elusive bird. With a little help from the local community and visitors alike we can do a lot to help the Kiwi out. Most of what we can do, collectively are very simple and easy things.
If you’re a neighbour of the national park a good way to help is by keeping your pets (dogs and cats) inside or chained up at night. This can give a Kiwi the chance to have safe passage through your backyard. Slowing down at night whilst driving can also reduce the risk of injuring or killing a Kiwi. Over 4000 Kiwi are killed each year by dogs and cars. It’s something small we can do that can make a big difference to the wildlife of Mount Aspiring national parks.
